Buttercream Frosting Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 2 ounces heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Cream Butter and Salt: In a large bowl or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream 1 cup unsalted butter and ½ teaspoon salt on low speed until the mixture is pale and creamy, which usually takes about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Add Powdered Sugar and Heavy Cream: Gradually add 4 cups powdered sugar and 2 ounces heavy cream alternately, a little at a time while mixing on low speed. Continue this process over about 3 minutes to ensure both ingredients are fully incorporated. If the frosting is too thick, add an additional tablespoon of heavy cream. If it’s too thin, add an extra ½ cup of powdered sugar until the desired consistency is achieved.
- Mix in Vanilla Extract and Whip: Add 1 tablespoon vanilla extract. Increase mixer speed to high and whip the frosting for 2 to 3 minutes until it becomes light, fluffy, and smooth. Scrape down the sides of the bowl every minute to ensure even mixing.
- Use or Store: Use the frosting immediately to decorate your baked goods, or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Bring to room temperature and re-whip before using if chilled.
Notes
- For thicker frosting, add more powdered sugar by ½ cup increments.
- For thinner frosting, add more heavy cream by 1 tablespoon increments.
- Ensure the butter is softened to room temperature for easy creaming and a smooth texture.
- This frosting can be colored with gel food coloring for decorative purposes.
- Store leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator, and let it come to room temperature and re-whip before use.
