Description

Crispy and flavorful Fried Green Tomatoes made with gluten-free ingredients, perfect as a Southern-inspired appetizer or side dish. These golden-fried slices are coated in a seasoned cornmeal and breadcrumb mixture and fried to perfection for a satisfying crunch.

Ingredients

Scale

Tomatoes

  • 4 medium green tomatoes, cut into 1/4-inch slices
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Dredging Station

  • 1/2 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 3/4 cup gluten-free cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup gluten-free breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil, about 1/2 inch for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare Tomatoes: Lay the tomato slices on a paper towel-lined tray and sprinkle both sides with salt. Let them rest for 10–15 minutes to release excess moisture, then gently pat dry.
  2. Set Up Dredging Station: Arrange three shallow bowls: one with gluten-free flour, the second with a whisked mixture of eggs and buttermilk, and the third with a blend of gluten-free cornmeal, gluten-free breadcrumbs, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper.
  3. Dredge Tomatoes: Coat each tomato slice first in the flour, then dip into the egg and buttermilk mixture, and finally press into the cornmeal-breadcrumb mixture to ensure an even, crispy coating.
  4. Heat Oil: Pour about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil into a large skillet and heat over medium heat until shimmering and hot enough for frying.
  5. Fry Tomatoes: Fry the coated tomato slices in batches, cooking each side for 2–3 minutes or until golden and crispy. Avoid overcrowding the pan to maintain oil temperature and even cooking.
  6. Drain and Serve: Remove fried tomatoes with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve warm, optionally with dipping sauces such as ranch or remoulade.

Notes

  • Fry in small batches to avoid overcrowding and ensure crispiness.
  • Keep cooked tomatoes warm in a low oven until ready to serve.
  • Serve with dipping sauces like ranch or remoulade for extra flavor.
  • This recipe is suitable for gluten-free and vegetarian diets.
